THEME: EARTHLY INHERITANCE AND HEAVENLY REWARD
A certain man in the crowd who has been robbed by his brother of his own share of inheritance demands for justice from the Lord of justice. But our Blessed Lord instead of concerning himself with the equitable distribution of earthly inheritance and material chose rather to address a more serious problem: Why earthly inheritance and material possessions have divided the two brothers.
The division, discord and war that is experienced in the Gospel text of today between brothers is but small in comparison to the quarrels, fights and wars in families we experience in our time caused by the unholy pursuit of earthly inheritance and material possessions. For landed properties and other earthly inheritance:
• Brothers have poisoned brothers to death
• Sisters and sisters have become sworn enemies
• Blood brothers have picked up swords and guns to split the blood of their kin.
• Friends have betrayed their friends and rendered them incapacitated for the rest of their lives.
Our Lord and master feels this is a more important issue to address, and truly so it’s. Hence, he puts before us a parable that mirrors the dual nature of our human inclinations – the pursuit of wealth and the salvation of souls; earthly inheritance and heavenly inheritance. He tells us that Physical and spiritual wellbeing divide our thoughts along whether to continue in merriment and debauchery or to turn our face back to the creator for salvation.
In this parable, the most cherished of both worlds is highlighted, the salvation of the soul. Store up for yourself righteousness that will last for eternity. Earthly inheritance, success and wealth without a spiritually balanced personality is worthless. We must put our trust in God with whom our success is secured. What shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world and suffer the loss of his soul?
GOOD MORNING AND HAPPY NEW WEEK!
