HOMILY OF SATURDAY WK 3 OF LENT (13/03/2021)
THEME: CHRISTIANITY IS NOT A COMPETITION
There’s one big mistake that many of us tend to make in our Christianity. We feel that we are competing with others who is a better Christian. And so, we compare our good deeds and actions and those of others and score ourselves 100%, and score others 0%We can’t be judges in our own case.
This was the problem of the Pharisee in today’s Gospel. He did a lot of good things in comparison to the tax collector. He was not sure whether God knew it. So he had to inform God! He lacked one very important virtue, humility. And God knew that, though the man himself didn’t. He was a judge in his own case.
The tax collector was the exact opposite. He had done a lot of bad things. He knew it, and God knew it too. He was not competing with anybody. He only wanted to make peace with his God. Thus, in humility he acknowledged his shortcomings, and begged for forgiveness. God answered his prayer.
No one is ever so good and righteous that he does not need God’s mercy. We should always approach him with a humble and contrite heart, like the tax collector, and we too shall return justified!
Good morning and Happy Weekend!
