CHARLEMAGNE’S WATERSHEDS

HOMILY OF THURSDAY WK 1 OF LENT  (26/02/2021)

THEME: THINK BEFORE YOU TALK
Words have power . Alankrita once wrote: The pen is mightier than the sword. Words are vitally significant for a phrase can define reality. Just calling a child worthless can devalue such in their eyes. Words like fat, ugly, lazy, or stupid hurt us in the classroom and still hurt now, decades after they were spoken. And so Jesus warns us in the Gospel reading of today: “ Carelessly call a brother ‘idiot!’ and you just might find yourself hauled into court. Thoughtlessly yell ‘stupid’ at a sister and you are on the brink of hellfire. The simple moral fact is that words kill.

While bad words are very injurious, good words, encouraging and kind words can help shape egos, make people capable of greater things and lift up broken spirits. “I love you” has great impact in our lives. So does “Go away” or “I don’t need you.” Hence, I enjoin you dear friends to always think before you speak, type, text or hit the send key. A blessing is always better than a curse!

Peace be with you!
