Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe state has ordered the immediate suspension of salaries of 135 Primary Health Care Development Agency (PHCDA) officials, including 20 doctors.

According to The Nation, Yahaya gave the directive on Thursday, September 10, after the personnel failed to appear for verification exercise set up by the Gombe state government. Yahaya gave the order while receiving the report of the verification committee whose duty was to verify the state’s workforce.

The Gombe state governor went on to direct that all PHCDA officials with non-relevant qualifications be transferred out of the agency.

It was gathered that the payroll of the affected staff will be moved to other departments where their qualifications are needed within their respective local government areas.

Governor Yahaya further suspended the salaries of 20 medical doctors who were on the government’s payroll but not at their duty posts for a very long time and in some cases for years.

Back in March, medical doctors in Gombe state embarked on an indefinite strike despite the worldwide coronavirus pandemic.

The action was taken by the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) over what it described as unfavourable working conditions.

This was disclosed by Dr. Saidu Alhassan, president of the association, on Monday, March 16. He said that the doctors proceeded on strike after 11 weeks of inconclusive negotiations with the state government.

He also alleged that the government has refused to upgrade House Officers currently on internship.
