HOMILY FOR THE NATIVITY OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY (8/9/2020)

 THEME: JOY COMES WITH DAWN

Today, we celebrate the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Though, not founded in Sacred Scriptures, Tradition gives excerpts of the scene that surrounded the birth of Mary. Joachim and Anne, two faithful servants of God found themselves in a desperate situation of unfruitfulness. A situation that saw them become the laughing stock of the community and threatened the bliss, joy, and communion of their union. This was a time of weeping for them. But never did they know that God was preparing something great for them. For greatness takes time, requires patience and perseverance. And then, through thin and tide, the dawn of greatness. Finally,  their patience bore fruits in the child born Immaculate (that is without stain of original sin). It was the dawn of a new era.

The birth of Mary brought joy and peace to Joachim and Anne and wiped away their tears. It was a time of restoration. It was the beginning of the fulfilment of the prophecy of Micah in the first reading. *In one statement however, Mary’s birthday celebration is but a remembrance of God’s grace and favours in her life.* As she herself clearly and succinctly observed: *For the Almighty has done great things for me; Holy is His name (Lk. 1:49).*

We, too, often in different times and seasons find ourselves pegged down by the vicissitudes of life. Marital crises caused by barrenness and sterility. Psychological instability caused by Business and career losses. Weakness and pains caused by an enduring ailment or sickness. Our lives have become an ocean of bitterness and grief as tears and sorrows fall drop by drop upon the eyes. Mary’s birth assures us that God is still alive. It gives us the confidence that this is only but a time of nightfall for us, dawn will surely come. And weeping may linger for the night but joy comes with dawn.

May the joy of the Lord be your strength today and always. Amen!
