HOMILY FOR THE MEMORIAL OF ST. GREGORY THE GREAT, THURSDAY WK 22 YR II (3/9/2020)

 THEME: ONLY A STEP FURTHER

The Gospel text of today is one of encouragement to those who have been labouring either in the cause of truth and righteousness or life generally, and whose success has not been according to their hope. This is the experience of the Apostles: We have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing (Lk 5:5).

The fruitless and unsuccessful toil experience of the fishermen mirror the experiences of millions of God’s children in various categories: the pastor, the teacher, the philanthropist, the missionary, even parents. Weeks, months, sometimes years, go by, and nothing or little may have resulted. Sometimes, we’ve prayed and prayed, and nothing seems to be getting better. Instead, it’s getting worse.

Under these circumstances of discouragement and apparent defeat we are tempted to say: “I will lay down my weapons; it is useless to proceed; ” But when this thought is being entertained there comes a manifestation of the Master, who by some means and in some language, says, ” Go, labour on: toil on and faint not.” To the “fisher of men” he says, “Let down your nets for a draught.” At this time, we must respond like Peter, if you say so, I shall lay down the nets.

There are times in life, when our human knowledge will fail us, our wealth of experience disappoint us.  Only the wisdom of God will never ever fail us. And so we must heed the gentle voice of the master saying toil on, don’t give up, just a little more effort, only a step further, and it shall be well. At the end, the Apostles had a great catch at the bidding of the Master, you too, shall never go unrewarded for the little more effort you make in your business, farm, vocation, studies, job, place of work. You shall have a great catch.

PRAYER: Help us, Lord, not to trust in our wealth of experience and knowledge but on God’s words. Amen!

GOOD MORNING!
